Mentoring Paula Parris
Paula Parris and I became friends on Instagram in late 2020. She was shooting with an iPhone and her work stopped me — I knew she had a natural eye for the shot — a talent that’s difficult, if not impossible to teach. As our friendship grew through conversations about photography, life, and everything in between, she mentioned that she had always wanted to be a photographer, but back in the day, the opportunity just wasn’t available to a young woman growing up in rural New South Wales.
Seeing her incredible talent, I was moved to mentor her and offered to teach her all that I had learned if she was still interested. Even if it was only for her enjoyment, I knew she had amazing images in her. She excitedly accepted, so I sent her one of my Nikon cameras and we hit the virtual classroom for a few hours every week.
Mentoring Paula has been an amazing experience. It taught me that I have a knack for imparting knowledge — fast-tracking someone toward a goal by removing all the noise I encountered in my own learning experience. And it taught me how good it feels to give back and watch a legacy grow because of it. Since then, she has taught one of her boys to shoot, and it’s incredible to feel like I’ve played a part in that.
Paula put in the work and is now hired regularly to capture and document music festivals, theatre events, portraits, and more. I'm proud of Paula and all that she's accomplished, and I'm pleased to offer some of her personal work here.
Printed in my studio to the same archival standard as my own work. You can find her prints in the Paula Parris category.
