Introducing Paula Parris
Paula Parris and I became friends on Instagram in late 2020. She was shooting with an iPhone and her work stopped me — I knew she had a natural eye for the shot — a talent that's difficult, if not impossible to teach. As our friendship grew through conversations about photography, life, and everything in between, she mentioned that she had always wanted to be a photographer but the opportunity just wasn't available for a girl growing up in rural New South Wales. Seeing her incredible talent, I was moved to mentor her and offered to teach her all that I had learned if she was still interested. Even if it was only for her enjoyment, I knew she had amazing images in her. She excitedly accepted, so I sent her one of my Nikon cameras and we hit the virtual classroom for a few hours every week. Mentoring Paula has been an amazing experience. It taught me that I'm really good at imparting knowledge — fast-tracking someone toward a goal by removing all the noise I encountered when learning. And it taught me how good it feels to give back and watch a legacy grow because of it. Since then, she has taught one of her boys to shoot, and it's incredible to feel like I've played a part in that. Paula is now hired regularly to capture and document music festivals, theatre events, portraits, and more, and I couldn't be more proud to offer some of her prints here. Printed in my studio to the same archival standard as my own work. You can find her work in the Paula Parris category.
A Few Words From Paula
I am a country living and loving girl having spent my whole life residing in rural NSW, Australia. If a picture is worth a thousand words, you will see fragments of who I am by following my work. In saying that, much of my photography doesn't reflect the environment of my own surroundings but connectedness to my spirit, to my art, and to my heart in the world that exists through my lens. I have enjoyed a four-year-long photography journey with Grant. Having taken one of his cameras off his hands, we started with the basics of learning how to operate it, branching off to editing sessions with a shared love of photography and, of course, a wonderful friendship along the way. My love of photography is decades in the making, coming to fruition later in life.
